Depression:

Major Depression is a profound and pervasive sense of hopelessness and despair and is manifested by a combination of symptoms that interfere with the ability to work, study, sleep, eat, and enjoy once pleasurable activities.

About one in six Americans experiences an episode of depression at some time during his/her life. Approximately one in six of these may commit suicide in the course of his/her illness.

Often, but not always, depression runs in families, and the course it takes is quite variable. Some people may only experience one or a few significant depressive episode(s) in their life, while others suffer chronic depression which requires lifetime treatment once it appears.

Currently approved treatments may have side effects which some people cannot tolerate, may take three to six weeks to work, and may not work at all in over one-third of patients treated.
